This is a very good set, once it’s built. The steering doesn’t work as advertized. The steering range is only about 1/2 of what the picture shows, but with a small modification, it can be made to go that far. The piston is not attached directly to the rear axel as the picture leads you to believe, but is turned by two gears, one on the axel, and one on the rod that turns the piston. Once it’s built, though, it has a very low profile. It sits very low to the ground, just like the real thing. It also has a very “fast and mean” look to it, no matter what angle you look at it from. However, it is not for the begginning builder. Sometimes, Technic can be hard to work with.
In closing, good job Lego Co., they’ve produced a very nice set.

If your lego builder is ready for the next phase, be sure to grab this guy. Santa brought this one this year and, although it truly was challenging for an eight-year-old, he certainly was proud of such an accomplishment when it was finished. Those pistons inside the motor actually more up and down just like a real car, and that just is way too cool to build too. If you have a child on the younger side of things, it will take about 2 hours to build this guy but believe me, it’s worth it. I also couldn’t believe how durable this guy is compared to other Lego sets. You can actually drop this buggy on the floor from a standing poition and none of the parts will come off. Can’t beat that for play! When I asked him to build the lawnmower, I got a “No way. I’m going to enjoy all my hard work for awhile!” It’s so neat that I’m thinking about getting another set just so we can have the lawnmower too! The rotation of the steering wheel we found to be just as advertised and just super fun, expecially when you put in a Lego Batman to drive around!
Lego outdoes themselves on these Technic series and this product is no exception. Look around for a better price too, especially the store with the r in the middle. Ours was about half of what amazon is offering. Great, great toy, great for the engineers in your life, highly, highly recommend!

My 7 year old son received this Lego Technic set for Christmas this year and has been very pleased with it. Not sure how long the pieces will remain seperate from the large box of Legos so I am unsure of the items’ use once they are in the mainstream.

Bought as birthday present for our 9yr old son who adores lego. This was made as soon as the box was opened!
He had no probolens following instructions and loved the fact that it was a bit different from the standard lego pieces. Has played and played with this and has made both models in kit. Well worth the money and the finished kart was actually larger than we thought.

Bought this set for my six-year old daughter to help illustrate some of the things she was learning about cars from The New Way Things Work. She ended up putting it together in around two-and-a-half hours and had a lot of fun doing it. I did help her in putting on some pieces because she lacked the coordination and/or strength to do so herself and interpreted a couple of the pictures in the instructions for her, but otherwise it was all her.
While not an exceptionally accurate representation of an actual car, there’s more than enough here to help illustrate such things as steering, axles, power transmission, and engine function. The highlight for both of us was the engine as it includes a piston moving in the cylinder on a crankshaft, even if it does work in reverse from the way it would in an actual go kart (of necessity the model’s wheels move the piston rather than the other way round).
There is an alternate riding lawnmower model which can be built but does not make use of the engine parts (it does steer). Having built the go kart first, we decided it was too nice to take apart to build the lawnmower; perhaps we should have built the riding lawnmower first.
All-in-all a fantastic product that delivers the best bang for the buck (function and technical principles vs. cost) in the Lego Technic line.

I am copying this review from another one I did on the Off Road Truck set, because much of what I wrote there is relavent here. I’ll change what needs to be changed.
I have even more mixed feelings about this set than the Off Road Truck. This was only slightly less expensive (for me) and seemed to have a lot less pieces, at least “useful” pieces that could be used to create other things.
When I grew up, the Technic sets had more “universal” pieces. They had a lot of the long, straight “beam” pieces (the ones with the holes in them) and the regular flat pieces, and less of the more specialized bent pieces and connectors. This meant that you could actually do a lot more with the sets than you can with the new ones, or so it seems. The new sets seem to rely more on all the little snap connectors to hold all of the specialized pieces together. This is both good and bad.
Good, the finished model or toy is much sturdier than the old ones would have been. Also, using the specialized pieces you get a higher quality finished look. It looks more “realistic”.
Bad in the fact that you have a much harder time creating your own model because the peices are more specialized. It’s hard to create something out of your head, so to speak, because you can’t just snap pieces together anymore. You have to take all the little pieces and find a way to get them together in such a way that they reach your goal. That’s kind of the point with Legos, but it is just more difficult now than it used to be. Also bad, which pieces get lost first? The little ones. With more little ones and less big ones, you run the risk of losing more of your pieces.
For this specific model, it is decent. I had fun putting it together with my son but it added little to our collection in terms of items we could use to create our own models, at least at this point. Still, the basic function is good, it was fairly easy to put together with my help, and he enjoyed the end product. It is also one of the cheaper models that were available for me to purchase, and as such I didn’t really expect a LOT. So it is worth the money, I’m just biased toward the old system.
The instructions are great. I love how each page has a box with all of the required pieces for that step, and they have a gage to use to make sure you get the correct axle piece. This helps a lot especially when you are building the model with your children.
I think I will start liking the “new” Technic system much more when I get more sets and have more pieces to chose from. I only have two sets currently and it is just really hard to create anything outside of the intended model. I never had that problem as a kid playing with these sets.
All in all, they are still a great toy. They are still fun, they still inspire creativity, and I highly recommend them for children of the listed age (I believe 8-14 on these), young adults, and any parent with a child that they can sit with to help build these.
